This community-based project fills a void of interaction spaces through the construction of a bakery. Through bakery workshops showcasing diverse cultural products, it fosters bonds among residents of various backgrounds. The community is involved in both the bakery and the building transformation, contributing to ceramic cladding production. Retaining on-site trees promotes well-being, while the building’s design encourages human interaction, relaxation, and collaborative handcraft activities for passers-by. Inspired by Gabriel Epstein’s Lansbury Estate, the project aims to bring delight and enjoyment to the local community.
A set of hand-made rolling pins constitutes a toolkit for ceramic cladding production for community involvement in the self-build process.
The project provides the community with a set of instructions for the handmade production of the toolkit and handcraft building elements.
The community uses methods derived from bakery production. The use of the toolkit can contribute to the self-build element of the building producing its ceramic cladding.
The building wraps around the on-site trees, creating spaces for relaxation outside and spaces for interaction inside. This promotes social well-being through contact with nature and between local residents.
The bakery opens up to the street inviting passersby to come inside and join collaborative baking workshops with other local residents.
