Why does the activity of dance tend to be hidden? How often does one spontaneously experience dance in their day? Addressing these questions, this project proposes a dance centre where dance occurs all hours of the day: be that in the form of a dance class, a dance performance against the backdrop of Regents Canal or a club night next to the water. Considering its location, facing the busy Regents Canal Towpath on 45 Lark Low, the building hopes to engage with the relationship between passer-by and dancer. To visually relate the formal expressiveness of dance with the architecture, the design of the dance centre is driven by the “skin and bone” concept. The building’s steel structure enables the movement of a wire mesh that is draped over the building. The materiality plays with the levels of transparency between passerby and dancer. The curtain-like draping details of the mesh perfectly frame the building which acquires the character of an open theatre.
The mesh system allows for the building to 'perform' across the river.
