Investigating processes of recycling and re-use and responding to the nearby major regeneration projects at Elephant and Castle Shopping Centre and the Aylesbury Estate, the project supports an ecology of historical and emerging local activity, including arcade gaming, local history engagement, sculpture and new building material production. Embracing the flexibility of an existing concrete framed building fronting Walworth Road, the proposal creates a bold new urban form, opening up the ground floor into a sea of columns and stacking new floors onto a prominent corner. Hollow clay blocks are harvested from the existing floor structures and refined into an ornamental structure, speaking to the contemporary need for architects to be more sensitive and more inventive with the structures and materials we already have.
