The Embassy of The Anonymous

Project details

Student Soyun Lim
Programme
Unit PG25
Year 4

The Embassy of the Anonymous explores an architecture of emotions – exploring the possibility of fabric in curtains as an enclosure, and to reveal and conceal privacy. Starting from the blanket the student has owned for over two decades, this project explores how the fabrics could function as a device to articulate the subtle psychology of fear and comfort as an extension of their personal experience with the object. Curtains mediate the residents’ presence with light/shadow and soft wind – constantly breaking and establishing the threshold of privacy. Depending on the density of the daylight and fabric textures, the project provides different atmospheric experiences explored by a wide range of physical models and collages. Located in Brussels, a hub for the European Union, the programme suggests an embassy for international diplomats working for the EU who feel vulnerable and lost with their national identities. Focusing on the emotional aspects of the building, the project proposes a residency for foreign diplomats to settle down in Brussels.
