SAIL AWAY envisions a configurable community building on the Dutch peninsula Java Eiland.
The unit brief It’s All About Time is addressed by imagining a phased construction for the building – the building evolves over time along with the quinquennial maritime event SAIL Amsterdam.
The film interrogates the contentiousness of the community building project – what makes a true community building? How much freedom should be given to the community in design? How might the community view or think about the proposal?
The project attempts to fulfil the wishes of the community while allowing freedom for them to design and build their own spaces in the form of plug-in units, which can be transported across the site by transformative infrastructures. They can be deployed at events, otherwise stored away in the tower.
Conceptual exploration utilising animated projection.
Acting as a giant shelf for housing modular plug-in units, the building is only truly finished in 2072. The lower sections are designated for enclosed event areas, while the higher sections offer smaller, intimate spaces.
Investigation of the vertical transportation of spaces and building illumination.
Plug-in units are designed and built by the community. The architectural language of the building pays homage to both SAIL and the maritime heritage of Java Eiland.
Proposal presented at a community meeting. What could possibly go wrong?
