York Road Poetry Station

Project details

Programme
Unit PG22
Year 4

This is the time to be slow...

York Road Poetry Station aims to foster friendships through poetry. This project proposes retrofitting the abandoned York Road London Underground station on the Piccadilly Line. The scheme aims to make poetry more accessible and exciting for the public, while encouraging people to slow down and appreciate the beauty of art in everyday life.

The building is designed according to the poem-writing process, from getting prompts and brainstorming, to drafting, writing, and at last, performing. The poetry exchange cycle embedded within the project, with its playful and interactive design, creates a community of poetry writers and readers who might come from all walks of life. Sharing feelings through poetry can not only act as an emotional outlet, but also expose our true thoughts to the world, creating friendships and connections that might be unlikely to happen elsewhere.

Socially, the project aims to empower the public and make poetry, or art, more accessible in everyday life. It also rethinks the treatment and potential of disused buildings in London, especially abandoned tube stations.

Exterior View

The project preserves the existing façade of York Road Station designed by Leslie Green in the 19th Century. Meanwhile, the extension plays with the arch-shape language and the pilcrow (line break) symbol as design motifs.

Poetry Exchange Cycle

York Road Poetry Station aims to create friendships and strengthen the sense of belonging through the exchange of thoughts and feelings through poetry.

Playful Poetry-Writing Programme

The programme and layout are designed according to the poetry-writing process. The interior spaces are playful and interactive to maximise social interaction.

Interior Views

The project plays with the existing design language of tube stations, such as the TfL logo, ticket machines, and faience tile cladding, giving them a second meaning.

Connection to the Underground Network

Directly accessible through the Underground, York Road Poetry Station acts as a ‘rest stop’ on the Piccadilly Line. The project challenges the design and usage of station buildings, potentially expanding to other stations.
