Visualising the Intangible, Capturing Endangered Languages

Project details

Programme
Unit PG21
Year 5

Florence has been a theatre of language discussions since the fourteenth century. Until 1861 the Italian peninsula was formed of many states, each with its own language or dialect. Italian was adopted as the official language with the unification of Italy. Previously, the Italian language was a literary language based on Tuscan as spoken mostly by the upper-class Florentine society.

It is within this context the project proposes the celebration of each region’s dialect, by drawing similarities and differences between words to educate the upcoming generations on endangered languages which lack written manifestation. The architecture is therefore a collective of dialects translated from geometric forms to preserve the intangible. It is with combining ruination with oral tradition, between a static architectural heritage and the intangible storytelling traditions of Italy, that it was possible to create spaces to enable discussions between communities through visual and collective learning. As one walks through the space, each piece is based on a specific word, which differences, from an intangible sound, can be visualised from large scale to small scale.
