Scoring Florence has derived directly from the rhythms, cycles, and durations of the city. A contemporary arts space on the river Arno, the project is a gallery developed through a reconstructed digital score of the city. In the same way a musical score leaves its interpretation up to the performer, the architectural score provides the designer agency in its application and development. A score is a piece of work that is yet to be performed, often utilised in arts that unfold in time. The spatial score reflects the relative durations and rhythms driving Florence which is then ‘performed’ by the designer, working directly with time and duration. The architectural interpretation of the score lies in the authors choice to capture certain elements that perhaps combine or intersect, often translating into temporal architectural fragments. This specific ‘performance’ of the score should be seen as one of several schemes possible. The project Scoring Florence proposes the use of architectural scores as a widespread notational method within the design process, resulting in highly site-specific and personal architectural responses.
