The city's loss of authenticity can be attributed to the substantial influx of tourists. Venice, once a thriving city home to a proud population of Venetians, is now largely inhabited by a floating population of tourists which far outnumbers residents. Moreover, the artisan spirit of the city is being eroded away. The proposed pavilion will serve as a means for Venetian artisans to be brought into the limelight, contributing to the preservation of the local heritage by providing studio spaces and residencies for artisans, thus halting the displacement of the local population.
Augmented reality (AR) is explored through image recognition. A non-verbal communication garment that could be deciphered through AR was developed. The pavilion too, will be augmented over time by both the artisans and visitors. The interior surfaces of the pavilion will be like blank canvases, over time enhanced with ornamentation. The glass will be replaced with stained glass, and the stone columns will be carved and made into display cases for Venetian crafts. The artisans will also be able to add a digital layer of information through AR technology into the physical fabric of the building.
