A&Co House is a community club for emerging creatives and organisations, aiming to create equitable opportunities for those who come from under-represented backgrounds. The project is an autobiographical exploration of British, Muslim, and Asian identities in Manchester and their manifestation within daily life, using theatre and performance as a means of architectural expression.
The chosen site is the student’s grandfather's former steel manufacturing warehouse, which is surrounded by terraced housing, located in a neighbourhood with deep family history. The area is now at risk of gentrification due to an influx of university students, which puts its cultural and ethnic heritage in danger of being erased. By examining family homes, household objects, and the nuances of our everyday environment, the project aims to conserve and register a family’s history and sense of identity.
A&Co House expands on traditional notions of architecture to encompass theatre, set design, and live performances - all while safeguarding both personal and local histories within pressing forces of gentrification.
