The In-between Goodsyard Estate challenges the orthodox master planning strategy that inevitably leads to the homogenisation of cities and displacement of local communities. Against the background of the growing gentrification of London’s neighbourhood, the Goodsyard Estate is a community housing project for the displaced communities in the East End that celebrates their diversified uses and the complex fabric of Spitalfields.

The current redevelopment proposal of Bishopsgate Goodsyard would privatise public spaces and segregate communities by transforming the site into a corporate plaza of offices, high-end retail and luxury home studio spaces. This new proposal questions the conventional arrangement of dwellings in relation to the urban environment with the introduction of in-between spaces into the community. In the project, the traditional terraced house typology is questioned with the concept of gardens, terraces, hedges, gabled walls, and façades blurred and redefined, creating a new public-private gradient and urban scenery that embodies diversity and inclusivity.
