When individuals pass away without friends or relatives to arrange a funeral and burial, they are handled by the public healthcare system, which provides a basic burial. However, the idea is that no one should have to die alone, as our true death occurs when there is no one left to remember us. Considering the history of our site, which has experienced abandonment followed by reconstruction and habitation, it is fitting for it to offer a space where the forgotten can be remembered in death. The deceased are taken to the island, where they are either transformed into soil or cremated, and integrate their bodies into the architecture and landscape. This option is also available for those who are environmentally conscious about the impact of their death. Individuals can choose to participate in the program by scanning QR codes found throughout the city. Private memorial rooms are available for those who opt in, allowing their loved ones to hold a funeral. In the public memorial hall, their life is commemorated through permanent digital memories accessed via QR codes. The centre is not a space for death, but a communal celebration of life for humans, the deceased and nature.
The building is nestled within the island, accommodating staff, the public and the deceased, all engaged in various activities.
Access to the building is through the first floor, which serves as a processing area for bodies and a memorial space for grieving. The underground floor houses an open public memorial hall, encouraging contemplation and remembrance of the deceased.
Lighting conditions are crucial for this building, with the brightest areas being directly underneath the roof lights where most of the light is reflected.
The second floor receives limited light filtered from the floor above, resulting in a predominantly dark space. The access stairs are illuminated, casting light on the ramps and creating pockets of darkness.
The 1:100 physical model emphasises the structure and materiality of the lower and upper levels. The model showcases the building entrance, highlighting the access and flow between the two floors.
