Richmond’s Refuge & Renewal – Glover’s Island

Project details

Programme
Studio Studio 2B
Year 2

The project focuses on residents living with dementia and incorporates research on social demographics around Glover Island & Richmond. The building proposal aims to create an amphibious labyrinthian residence inspired by the monastic routine lifestyle found in various monasteries worldwide. The residence is designed to accommodate fifteen people, including five full-time carers, and temporary residents in the form of up to twelve deer (Fallow + Red) seeking refuge from the local Richmond Park culling season. Glover's Island is introduced to residents during the early stages of dementia, allowing them to familiarise themselves with the space and make an informed decision about residing there. Upon acceptance, residents can choose a personality-based living cluster that aligns with their personal interests. The project seeks to establish a symbiotic relationship between humans, deer and the island, with mutual benefits in terms of structure, materials and concepts.

The diorama trilogy showcases the island's textural palette and the need for an energy complex consisting of a biodigester, constructed wetland and rainwater collection pools. These elements are highlighted in the inhabited section.
