Hanwell Wildflower Labs will serve as an educational, propagational and experimental hub within Hanwell. Situated between the canal bank and Warren Farm, the site holds a unique position at the intersection of suburbia and a threatened wildflower meadow, which over the past decade has been an area of contested land. This proposal recognises and honours the symbiotic relationship between land and humans. It emphasises the importance of supporting and caring for each other for mutual preservation. Hanwell Wildflower Labs seamlessly blend into the landscape, forming an elegant alliance with the rising hill of the wildflower meadow.
The building applies the concept of heavy vs light intervention, with three prongs creating two exterior plots. The west wing features a heavier intervention, while the east remains untouched, preserving the natural flora and fauna.
The west wing of the building features a raised external walkway where visitors can gather and experience the beauty of the meadow's natural wildflowers.
Glass is the secondary building material used primarily for the front, back and roof façades, creating an open and inviting atmosphere for visitors and onlookers.
Where land meets people, people meet one another, and suburban living meets nature.
The project site is home to numerous protected wildlife species, including the Skylark bird, which nests within the wildflowers. The west wing of the project caters to this, allowing nature to thrive and birds to nest undisturbed.
