Social Warmth

Project details

Programme
Studio Studio 2A
Year 1

The sudden emergence of fuel poverty has created a desperate need for heated spaces to shelter and protect affected stakeholders from the cold. The Silent Wall has had a significant social impact on the project site, visually and socially dividing the canal inhabitants, residential areas and the hospital. To address this, the project proposes a community space in the form of a canteen with a bookable multi-functional room. The design maximises sunlight access by incorporating Trombe walls, which increase passive heating and enhance the building's 'heat bank' function.

The project aims to initiate a movement in the local area to overcome the social separation caused by the Silent Wall and reconnect the community to its surroundings. The design facilitates visual awareness and interaction between inhabitants on both sides of the Silent Wall. Seamless ramps connect to the green park, creating an inviting environment for social gatherings and activities. The building becomes an integral part of the locals' everyday life, encouraging interactions and fostering a greater sense of community and unity.

Axonometric Concept Diagram

The project aims to establish physical and visual connections to reconnect the three main areas that are currently separated by the Silent Wall. The implementation of Trombe walls maximises sunlight exposure and utilises stored heat.

Plan Drawings

The grass roof connects the hospital (left) and residential (right) sides of the site. The plan shows the height hierarchy, with the canteen being the largest and lowest space.

Section Drawings

The design emphasises height hierarchy and spatial relationships, with sections showcasing the ramps as a playscape and the right section illustrating the hierarchy between the grass roof, courtyard and canteen.

Canteen Interior

The canteen serves as a socially inclusive space, doubling as a heat pocket. The design promotes face-to-face interactions among all occupants, creating a spacious environment and enhancing heat retention.

Physical and Visual Connections

From the rooftop of the building, a clear view of the canal over the Silent Wall can be obtained. The seamless ramps connecting to the green park foster an environment where locals can engage in social gatherings and outdoor activities.
