Growing Great Yarmouth

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 8
Year 4

Growing Great Yarmouth creates a horticultural tourism destination on the Norfolk Coast. The proposal showcases a stock-free organic farm – a type of agriculture which works with the land, using no external products – and invites tourists and locals alike to explore the system. Additionally, it offers workshops to teach locals about horticulture at home, and a marketplace where stock-free produce can be distributed to the community. The project addresses the issues of community health and seasonal tourism in the area by promoting horticulture and healthy living, and by attracting specialists and horticulturalists.

A 13th Century town wall bisects the site, and the dialogue between the wall and the proposal highlights the feature whilst remaining respectful. The building uses a bespoke, post-tensioned masonry system, formed of local limestone and tensioned steel cable to create dramatic, arch-like spanning forms.

Structural Model

The structural model demonstrates the principles behind post-tensioned masonry arches. The two arches cross at the centre to provide lateral stability.
