The Worshipful Company of Boat Designers

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 6
Year 3

A habitable pedestrian bridge is proposed in central London to serve as a new venue for hosting the historic London Boat Show. The bridge consists of pontoons spanning across the River Thames, attached to a pedestrian and cycling bridge that connects Inner Temple Gardens with the Queen's Walkway. This project aims to achieve a connection between the local communities of the north and south banks while supporting the thriving London-based yacht design industry.

The concept for this bridge arises from London's escalating risk of floods by 2080, which could potentially transform the city's streets and the lifestyle of Londoners, resembling the canals of Venice. This possibility presents an entrepreneurial opportunity for the yacht industry, where small-sized commuting yachts could replace cars, making boats more relevant to the public than they are today.

The London Boat Show holds significant commercial and historical importance, having been first organised in 1955. Traditionally, it has been hosted in indoor venues located in either West or East London. In contrast, this bridge development centralises the show in an outdoor venue, providing open access to the public.
