Revitalising Harlech and the surrounding region involves the integration of industry and education, envisioning a future centred around textiles and material development, particularly focused on durable waterproof materials. The design approach reflects the local landscape both aesthetically and programmatically, employing a range of materials and forms inspired by local cliffs to create a series of enigmatic black boxes.
The project aims to consolidate concept development, research, testing, and manufacturing in one location, departing from the current carbon-intensive global system that involves extensive product transportation at each stage. Additionally, it seeks to reestablish the connection between designers and the shop floor. The project explores the establishment of passive material testing facilities on-site, utilising excess heat, harvested rainwater, and the interstitial spaces between buildings to generate a variety of microclimates. These microclimates encompass passive wind tunnels, dry climate chambers, and humidity testing areas.
