Blink!

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 5
Year 3
Award
  • Year 3 Sustainability Prize

Stage 1:

A satirical film revolves around a 'prop' that responds to the question: what do we miss when we blink? The prop visually demonstrates the transfer of energy from kinetic forms (the blink) to elastic potential (the mechanism) to electrical energy (the photograph). It captures the moments when our eyes are closed, which amounts to over 3000 seconds per day.

Stage 2:

The Film Institute, being inherently collaborative, provides spaces for people to share, form cross-cultural connections, and tell stories. Alongside the creative energy generated in filmmaking, the Unit 5 brief explores the concept of donating a 15MW nuclear battery for the initial 7 years, after which the site will transition to renewable energy sources. The institute will be located in the former education college, Coleg Harlech, with a rich history of radical politics and resistance. As part of the Energy Democracy Movement, the institute will distribute the nuclear battery's energy to the local community.

Blink!

Blink!

A prop that captures a photograph of the wearer when they blink. The mechanism of the device demonstrates the transfer of energy required to capture a photograph from a blink.

Plan for the Film Institute

A view index illustrates the elements of the site that are retained and removed, and how the architectural and social history of Coleg Harlech is enriched with the introduction of the new typology.

The Archive Room for Inspiration

The archive room is a source of inspiration for filmmakers. As part of the Coleg's original extensive library, the additional archive booths provide spaces for filmmakers to watch, read and exchange ideas for their own films.

Dune Pods

Forming part of the café, the pods are collaborative spaces for groups, overlooking the dunes and the Welsh sunset.
