Reinventing Can Ricart is an experimental self-build co-housing scheme which aims to revitalise a former industrial complex in Barcelona from ruins into residences. A 4×4m steel grid framework is delivered to the site, infilling the space left between the existing buildings to provide the structure for the self-build initiative.
The scheme grows through three phases. In phase one, the existing buildings are retrofitted into fabrication workshops, providing training in sustainable self-build construction. In phase two, graduates from the fabrication workshops can utilise their newly acquired skills by infilling the open framework. During phase three, as the framework is filled with self-builds, communal spaces are developed within the uninhabited modules and remaining existing buildings.
The scheme aims to create homes better suited to modern family dynamics and projected environmental needs. As an alternative to the mass-produced apartments, the scheme offers the opportunity for a community of homes with personality. The homes can be customised with items from a catalogue which makes use of recycled materials and the teaching and making workshops open site.
Collections of plans of self-built homes for different scenarios: Open plan home for a couple, which can easily be extended in the future. Twin self-built homes for a multigenerational family. Self-built home for three young flat sharers.
Section through fabrication workshops and two housing clusters.
