An Empowered Community of Immigrants in Poblenou

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 4
Year 3

This project retrofits the abandoned industrial buildings of Can Ricart in Poblenou, Barcelona. Based on Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, each building serves a catered purpose to aid immigrants in Poblenou become their best self.

The masterplan includes housing, a gallery, and a mosque as these spaces help fulfil the pyramid’s steps regarding physiological safety, sense of community, and self-esteem through art media. The overarching architecture of these different spaces includes arches and courtyards that tie the complex together.

Additionally, the project explores the relationship between the existing buildings and the new proposals. The existing external walls become internal partitions that subdivide spaces and effectively transfer structural loads to the ground.
