Montserrat Care Centre and Residencies

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 4
Year 3

This project takes abandoned industrial buildings to create a residential complex and care centre that for autistic people, where the architectural elements allow those who would otherwise not be able to, to live independently.

The architectural forms are inspired by the Montserrat Mountain Range, which surrounds and shelters Barcelona, in much the same way, the new architecture creates a safe and sheltered space inside the complex.

The focus is on inclusive design and making spaces that promote care. The masonry material palette is selected to match the previously existing buildings and architecture of Barcelona, as well as creating cosy and safe spaces.

The site also aims to help endangered bird species in Barcelona by having specifically designed spaces and façade cladding that encourages birds to visit and nest on the site. This creates an overarching activity of care that is fundamental to the complex, as the birds create a pastoral environment on the site, where residents feel safe and sheltered from negative sensory stimulants in the outside world. Looking after the birds also becomes a practice of care that will act as a strong form of therapy for residents.

Site Elevation

South-East elevation of the site, showing how the new architecture integrates with the previously existing structure.

Site Section

A section through the tower shows therapy spaces, where the activity taking place on each floor represents a different practice of care. A section through the living spaces of several family residencies is also shown.

Site Masterplan

The site masterplan shows the existing buildings, and all new architecture. It can be seen how the original footprint of the buildings on site is maintained and improved through the new structures to make it inhabitable.

Render Views

These images show how the arch and domed structure along with the brick walls create a comforting and cosy interior and how courtyard areas are formed between the different domed units where plants can grow, and children are able to play safely.

Cosy Conversation Corner

The pavilion of care aims to create a space for conversation through the senses. Bird song and flowing water enhance the mood through hearing, lavender and oranges promote relaxation through smell, and soft surfaces help people relax through touch.
