This project focuses on designing upsized housing for elderly residents of Can Ricart, Barcelona and introducing an intergenerational family home typology. The aim is to reintroduce a the alternative – yet formerly traditional – living arrangement of an extended family of multiple generations, while maintaining strong autonomy and independence for elderly residents. The apartments are intended to promote a large amount of user input through designing for self-build, as well as offering adaptable and extendible internal layouts. Through a participatory lens, traditional craftsmanship using local and Mediterranean techniques and materials invigorates the design.
At site level, the mat-building typology is a key driver for creating interconnected public and private spaces threaded by courtyards and restored building remains from the site’s rich industrial and artisanal history. Thus, adaptive reuse of the existing fabric is at the heart of the design from unit to masterplan level.
The self-build component culminates in a seasonal, communal ritual of construction and is an opportunity for the reconvened family to partake in building and upkeeping their homes.
New gateway among existing residential buildings and facing Hangar – the existing arts collective on the site – and the historic clock tower to create an iconic and unique view.
Site section showing the upsizing proposal inserted between existing buildings. The ground floor is mostly dedicated to public courtyards that connect across the building with an underground swimming and sauna area below.
Axonometric view of the site with existing residential, commercial, and historic buildings with new building fabric flooding ground level. New buildings shown at various levels of completion of self-built cladding and roofing.
A system of straw and mud construction was developed. Inspired by the rural vernacular of the Mediterranean 'barraca', the system enables local residents to come together after the harvest and build timber framed panels filled with natural materials.
Developed by hand drawing at 1:50. Based on large, central apartments for grandparents as main users, and two neighbouring apartments for other family members with extendable shared living and dining rooms to open up in festivities and holidays.
