Hackney’s Collective Boat Dwellings

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 3
Year 3

Hackney’s Collective Boat Dwellings is a proposal for a new kind of housing situated by River Lea in Hackney Wick, London. It is a self-build scheme for people living on boats who are given an opportunity to extend their homes onto the ground. By means of cooperation and self-discipline, boaters create the space which brings them together and creates a feeling of safety for those whose homes are situated on the River Lea and very often lack the sense of privacy and security. Self-builders are given a construction manual that helps them build the structure based on standard sized materials. However, given the profound nature of boaters who very often find objects to adjust their boats by themselves, the finishing of the houses is made from reused materials collected by the boaters. Hence, every house is very distinct and represents its own character. The houses play a role of extensions of boats and by means of fluent connection the two become one piece of architecture.

Federico’s House Construction Process

Federico collects stained glass from various parts in the world and uses it to expand his home.

First Floor Plan

Floor plan depicts eight docking spaces for the boats. Each house has a garden and a workshop where self-builders build the houses.

Section

There is a communal garden and a picnic area for those living in the collective. The drive-thru workshop provides the possibility for boaters passing by to adjust their boats.

Hackney’s Collective Boat Dwellings

Garden is the common construction site where diverse extensions of the houses are built, each representing a distinct character.

Connection between the boat and the house

Boat approaches the house and connects with it with the stairway.
