Welcome to Zortziko Euskal Pilota Academy, a Basque pelota complex located within the vibrant Zorrotzaurre district of Bilbao, Spain. This academy stands as a testament to the harmonious coexistence of the old and the new, fostering the sustainable regeneration of this historic area while placing a special focus on empowering girls and women in the realm of Basque pelota.
The complex comprises a renovated church and a clergy house. But the academy's vision extends beyond preservation alone. Just steps away from the renovated church, a brand-new arena constructed from timber portal frames and lattice trusses awaits. Putting an emphasis on sustainability and net zero design, this arena stands as a symbol of progress and innovation, reflecting the spirit of the Zorrotzaurre regeneration project.
The academy is exclusively dedicated to girls and women, fostering an environment of inclusivity, empowerment, and support. By focusing solely on the needs and aspirations of girls and women, the academy provides a nurturing and empowering space where they can excel and thrive to the highest level of the sport.
The academy saws together old and new buildings through semi-external spaces, walled gardens, and outdoor recreational courts. All aim at fostering a sense of community between the athletes and the residents of Zorrotzaurre.
The spatial organisation of the arena is arranged around the central court with the ancillary spaces housed below the rake seating. It is designed to focus all the attention on the women playing Basque pelota.
North of the arena, a shaded summer garden welcomes the public off the new tramway line and guides them towards food and beverage kiosks to enjoy a cold drink and some pintxos before the game.
Most of the components of the arena can be manufactured off-site and brought there on trucks. Through passive strategies, low carbon systems and solar panels on some parts of the roof the arena achieves net zero carbon.
The academy, while being primarily a sports complex, also aims to be a place where the old and the new residents of the island can come together and celebrate Basque culture.
