CONFLUENCIA BILBAO

Project details

Programme
Unit Unit 1
Year 4

This project takes place on Zorrotzaurre island on the concept of ‘city acupuncture’ and aims to revitalise the Artiach biscuit factory, which holds historical and cultural significance. The project acknowledges the importance of mental well-being of a community who holds the legacy of heavy industrialisation and emphasises the creation of well-crafted public spaces to foster social connections and generate new urban value. The project aims to transform the building from a machine-like space into a more creative, empathetic, and interconnected environment that encourages holistic collaboration among the existing creative sectors.

The Spanish word ‘CONFLUENCIA’ used for this project’s name refers to a gathering or convergence of diverse elements, ideas, or activities. This project envisions this word to embody a place where different creative pursuits come together and can be celebrated.

The new design proposes a dynamic landscape of co-working and public spaces both inside and outside the building. These spaces can adapt over time to accommodate various uses, fostering an ever-changing interactive environment that expands the possibilities and freedom of its users.

Building Overview

The building features diverse public spaces, including outdoor and rooftop gardens. The deployable timber frame installations provide flexible space hosts outdoor exhibitions and weekend art markets, adding vibrancy to the building.
