Characterised by Etxea (meaning 'the home' in Basque) – this residentially-located community hub explores the relationship between Basque identity and belonging. Built against the backdrop of a decreasing Basque-speaking population due to a history of forceful regimes, Etxea hosts a cultural celebration of the language, life, and artistry of Basque communities.
The development begins with an existing 1900s heritage home in Zorrotzaurre, Bilbao, which serves as an entry portal to the main building. Within the home, period rooms are available for locals to self-curate and exhibit the items and ancestral belongings they love most.
At the heart of the building, lies an interactive central courtyard and circulation, around wich language immersion rooms offer a unique learning experience through Basque-only communication, toys, and books to encourage active learning through play. The teaching and commercial kitchens offer the chance to share traditional dishes. These spaces lead to the grand performance space, which remains alive through the night, proudly showcasing a range of traditional and folk dances for all.
