Upcycled Community Garden

The primary goal of this project was to raise awareness about waste and its impact on our daily lives. Often, we tend to dispose of waste without considering its consequences, an ‘out of sight, out of mind’ approach, leaving others to deal with it. By eliminating the distance between people and their waste, this project aims to show the value of discarded materials through design. Instead of viewing waste as something to be discarded, we should see it as misplaced material. ]

As the project progressed, a secondary objective emerged: to provide apartment blocks, starting with my own, with a space to collect and utilise food waste, thereby reducing the amount sent to landfills. This idea stemmed from the absence of food waste collection services in apartment blocks due to logistical challenges.

This methodology revolved around three main themes: community engagement, exploration of materials and structural methods, and the final spatial proposal for the community garden. The Ansell House Upcycled Community Garden aims to bring the community together in a collective project that aims to shift people's mindset about food and material waste.

Ansell House Upcycled Community Garden, still No. 2

This still shows people inhabiting the leisure space, composed of furniture made from repurposed waste. The apartment building can be seen in the background and to the left there is a shed made primarily of PET bottles. Drawing and collage.

Ansell House Upcycled Community Garden, still No. 3

This still of the composting section shows someone bringing food waste to the PET bottle compost bin, as well as someone mowing the lawn and tires repurposed as planters. Drawing and collage.
