Is Nature Naturally Beautiful? explores the concept of beauty in nature and the role of decontextualisation in shaping people's perception of natural spaces. The project focuses on Litholophus Rhipidium, a species with limited available information, which prompts speculation about its function and purpose. This exploration delves into how decontextualisation can influence individuals' opinions and responses.
Taking inspiration from artists such as Tauba Auerbach and Richard Wentworth, known for creating beauty from seemingly mundane objects or fragments of the landscape, the project delves into the realms of abstraction and the juxtaposition of images to provoke thought.
The project incorporates experiments with starch spray, interviews on nature, photography based on emotional response and algorithmic analysis. Through these approaches, the project aims to investigate the relationship between nature, beauty, decontextualisation and human perception. The goal is to challenge preconceived notions of beauty, encourage contemplation of the environment, and raise questions about the influence of context on our understanding of the natural world.
An algorithm was developed to analyse the images for specific visual qualities.
A final selection of images is composed by removing keys colours and tones highlighted by the algorithm.
