Think Like A Tree

Project details

Programme
Year 2

A Project Creating Wearable Prostheses with Tactile Sensory Resemblance to Tree Bark.

"Over the course of a century, the depletion of trees due to human consumption has led people to seek new ways to reconnect with nature through technology." In response, the Bark Prosthetics project was launched as an innovative initiative that focuses on designing wearable prosthetics that emulate the bark of the London Plane tree.

The primary objective of the project is to provide a distinctive sensory experience by utilising technology to simulate the movement and sensation of being a tree. By allowing individuals to wear prosthetics resembling tree bark on one side of their body while still maintaining their human identity on the other side, the project aims to deepen the bond between humans and the natural world.

This approach encourages an appreciation and celebration of nature while nurturing a sense of environmental awareness. Ultimately, the Bark Prosthetics project offers an innovative and ironic means of reminding individuals about their connection to the natural world, while simultaneously encouraging them to engage with their physical bodies and nature itself.

Touching the Tree

During the final exhibition, meticulous attention was given to engaging and interacting with the trees that served as inspiration for the final work. This involved exploring textures and forms to establish a sense of empathy with the trees.

Bark Textures

3D scans were taken of the bark texture in order to create 3D printed moulds that could be applied and laid across skin.

Prosthetic Proposals

The initial sketch proposals focused on the placement, mechanism, and bodily adjacency of the empathic tree prosthetics.

Embrace the Tree

Performative exploration involved the entwining of arms and branches with another tree.
