Shadows in Motion

Project details

Programme
Year 1

The bustling marketplace of Chapel Market comes alive with vibrant shadows as vendors sell their goods under the radiant sun. As the stalls and umbrellas cast their shadows onto the ground, an intricate mosaic of light and dark patches emerge. Amidst this captivating scene, people can be observed strolling through the shadows, some pausing to examine the merchandise while others hasten by. These shadows manifest in various forms, either as opaque, solid shapes or as translucent areas that allow glimpses of light to filter through. Throughout the day, the shadows fluidly shift and transform as the sun traverses the sky. Chapel Market encapsulates the dynamic interplay between light and shadow, embodying the lively ambiance of a bustling London High Street. The project aimed to thoroughly investigate and present the impacts of these shadows by carefully observing their density, size, and diverse types. These findings were documented through methods such as mapping and developing a Camera Obscura device to capture these observations and produce detailed maps, either manually or with UV light photographs.
